Race suggestions :

  • Keep dogs up to date on vaccinations. Do not skijor with a dog that is showing signs of illness or physical injury, or which is not capable of running.
  • .
  • Restrain dogs before and after skijoring. Do not let dogs run loose on the trail or in the holding area.Do not turn your dogs loose, no matter how well behaved they may be.
  • .
  • Bring a helper/handler to events at which you may need assistance. Event coordinators and volunteers may not be able to attend to your specific needs while also conducting the event
  • .
  • Go to the Pre-race Musher's meeting. Learn about any rule changes that apply to the race. The Official time will be announced (set your watch to this time. The start time is based on the official time.) The condition of the trail and it's layout will be discussed.
  • .
  • Pick up the race packet which has the bib and the race sheet. It gives the race order and your chute number, chute and start time. You need to know what your chute number and time is, so you can be staged properly. Each team will start at their assigned time. Typically, one team will start every minute.
  • .
  • Wear your race bib (must be visible, not under your coat.) Know who is to be in front and behind you, so you know where your place is. once at the chute area race officials will help get you properly situated.
  • .
  • Get a person or two to help you bring your team up to the chute. You should know your dogs and know how they handle crowds, know how they handle other dogs and strangers (men-vs-women-vs-kids.)
  • .
  • Your dogs will probably get marked with paint on the 1st day by someone at the chute, it may be on the leg, body or head (it will come off eventually.)
  • .
  • Use equipment that has worked during training. Use dogs that have run together as a team in training or that you know will run together.
  • .
  • When passing from behind, call "Trail" and "On your right (or left). If being passed, move to one side, slow down or stop and pull your dog toward you. After being passed, wait awhile (approx. distance or time?) to allow some distance between you and the team that passed you. Resist the urge to start right away and catch thhe team that passed you. The resulting "leapfrog" hurts both of your times
  • Clean up after yourself and your dog, leave the parking area as nice as you found them. A plastic grocery store bag works well for this chore if you don't want to carry a shovel. Keep some bags handy and use them.
  • Observe a race before participating in one.
  • Know race rules and trail etiquette.
  • You are responsible for the behavior of your team in every race situation.
