MIDWEST SKIJORERS We began as an informal club in 1999. In October 2000, we became a non-profit corporation. The main objective of the club was to help people new to the sport get started. Today, this is still the prime objective of the club. In early 1999, there were no trails designated for skijoring in the Twin Cities. Today we have trail access in dozens of places throughout Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin and Ramsey Counties. We also work with other skijor clubs to expand our skijoring opportunities. MISSION OF THE CLUB: The Midwest Skijorers Club is committed to advancing the sport of skijoring in the Twin Cities and upper Midwest. We assist beginning skijorers with seminars and novice events so they may more fully enjoy this unique sport. We endeavor to develop and promote events and activities related to skijoring. We seek to educate the public about the nature and benefits of skijoring for dogs and their human companions. We work with communities for greater trail access and improved trail safety. WHAT IS SKIJORING: Skijoring translates as "ski driving". Its history derives
from the Norwegians, Swedes, Fins and Laplanders. Skijoring has been done
using horses and reindeer as well as dogs. It is currently used in reference
to a skier pulled over snow by one or more dogs. |
